Join us for a four-week creative journey exploring drawing, print, stitch, and collage on cloth. Each session introduces new techniques in mixed media textiles, inspired by leading contemporary artists. From gestural mark-making to layered surfaces, you’ll experiment with fabric as both canvas and storytelling medium, building confidence week by week. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced maker, you’ll leave with a collection of expressive textile pieces and fresh approaches to working with cloth.

 Saturday Mixed Media + Textiles Series (Sept 6 – 27, 10–12am)

Week 1 – 6th Sept

Theme: Layering Stories – Drawing into Cloth

  • Techniques: Charcoal + ink mark making on fabric, layering with fabric collage, heat-set inks.

  • Outcome: A small textile panel with gestural drawing integrated into cloth layers.

  • Artist Inspiration: Bisa Butler – her expressive use of fabric as both color and line.

Week 2 – 13th Sept

Theme: Print + Stitch

  • Techniques: Monoprinting and gel printing onto fabric, adding stitch (hand embroidery or machine) to enhance texture and marks.

  • Outcome: Printed fabric sample book or one developed piece.

  • Artist Inspiration: Sue Stone – UK textile artist who mixes print, paint, and stitch to create narrative surfaces.

Week 3 – 20th Sept

Theme: Fragments + Assemblage

  • Techniques: Working with torn cloth, layered prints, paper and textile fragments, combining collage and stitch.

  • Outcome: A tactile “fragment panel” exploring composition.

  • Artist Inspiration: Louise Baldwin – contemporary textile artist known for combining mixed media, drawing, and cloth.

Week 4 – 27th Sept

Theme: Textile Surfaces – Mixed Media Painting on Cloth

  • Techniques: Acrylic inks, resist and mark-making on cloth, layering with sheers, adding stitch or embellishment.

  • Outcome: A final mixed media textile artwork (A4–A3 scale).

  • Artist Inspiration: Dorothy Caldwell – Canadian artist who works with mark making, surface, and stitch to create expressive, painterly textiles.

Suggested Contemporary Artists for Inspiration

  1. Bisa Butler – quilted portraits that use fabric as brushstrokes.

  2. Sue Stone – narratives combining hand stitch, print, and paint.
